The Summit County Sheriff’s Office says a local resident intervened when a man attacked a woman in the yard outside their home after a crash on Interstate 70.

Around 7:40 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, Summit County Sheriff’s deputies along with Colorado State Patrol and the Frisco Police Department responded to a rollover crash on I-70, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office. The crash reportedly occurred between exits 201 and 203 on I-70 that lead to Frisco.

On the way to the crash, deputies received two separate reports of a man and woman fighting in the backyard of a home near the interstate, the release states. Deputies, troopers and officers who split up to respond to both scenes at the same time later determined the crash and the fight were connected, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

At the crash site, deputies found an overturned vehicle in the median, but no one was present with the vehicle, the release states. But near the residence where the fight was reported, deputies located Jovany Enriquez, 20, of Leadville, according to the release.

At the home where the fight was reported, a resident told deputies that they heard a commotion in their backyard and saw a man, later identified as Enriquez, slamming a woman’s head into the ground, the release states. The resident then retrieved a handgun from inside the home and ordered Enriquez to stop, causing him to flee, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The resident reportedly let the woman inside the home for her safety until deputies arrived.

Deputies found probable cause to arrest Enriquez on charges including first degree assault with extreme indifference, a felony; reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor; reckless driving, a misdemeanor; and driving under the influence, a misdemeanor; the release states. Deputies then transported him to the Summit County jail, where he has been held on a $25,000 bond, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

“We always encourage people to be aware of their surroundings and to keep their doors locked for safety,” Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons said in a statement. “In this case, the resident was not only aware of their surroundings and prepared but also chose to intervene to assist someone in danger, which was truly remarkable.”
