U.S. Highway 40 in Winter Park has reopened to traffic after a multivehicle crash in Winter Park resulted in one fatality and serious injuries to two other people on Sunday, March 2.

The accident occurred at approximately 8:25 a.m. at mile marker 232, between Lakota Drive and the north entrance to Winter Park Drive, according to a news release from the Fraser Winter Park Police Department.

According to preliminary information in the release, a 2008 Dodge Ram truck traveling westbound “lost traction on icy roads and veered into the eastbound lane of travel.”

The truck first sideswiped a silver Nissan that was traveling eastbound. The truck continued traveling in the eastbound lane, then collided with an eastbound red 2015 Hyundai.

First responders determined on-scene that one person involved in the crash suffered fatal injuries and two other people suffered serious injuries, the news release states.

Grand County EMS transported one victim to Middle Park Medical Center in Granby, the release states. A second victim was airlifted to a St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver by a MedEvac helicopter.

“It is believed that the deceased victim was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash,” the news release states. “The investigation is still in the early stages, so our narrative on the crash may change as we learn more information.”

The serious accident caused the shutdown of U.S. Highway 40 for approximately two hours. As of 1:20 p.m., the highway is fully reopened to traffic, according to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.

The Grand County Sheriff’s Office, Grand County EMS, East Grand Fire Department and the Granby Police Department all assisted the Fraser Winter Park Police in the crash. The Grand County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased victim.

“Our most sincere condolences go out to the victims of this tragic event,” the Fraser Winter Park police stated.
