Summit County government offering free radon test kits for renters and homeowners

Radon naturally occurs at high levels in Summit County’s soils, rocks and water

The Summit County Department of Environmental Health is recommending that all residents test their homes for radon, according to a news release from the county government.

January is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s national radon action month. Radon is an odorless, radioactive gas. Radon naturally occurs at high levels in Summit County’s soils, rocks and water, and is the second-leading cause of death after lung cancer in the U.S.

The Department of Environmental Health offers free radon test kits for both renters and homeowners. The kits are available in the Summit County Environmental Health offices at the County Commons at 37 Peak One Drive from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or at the South Branch Library at 103 S. Harris St. in Breckenridge.
